Born
Brent K. Woods, I am the youngest of 5 children. As a result of
divorce I spent my early childhood and adolescence with my mother
and 2 older siblings and the latter part of my youth with my father
and an older brother. The changes in environment gave me different
perspectives on life. I saw one side from that of a single mother
struggling to raise her kids and the other from a father who had
made mistakes and was doing everything he could to make sure his
sons didn’t make the same mistakes as young men that he
had.
But there was one thing consistent no matter where I lived; I
was always drawn to the music of my environment. For example,
my first appreciation for rhythm and sound started when I lived
in New Orleans with its rich jazz culture and later in Charlotte,
NC where I formed a love for hip-hop.
It was at age 13 that I came back to Kansas City to live with
my father. I called that time period “The Golden Years of
Hip-Hop”. A time in history where, if you’re younger
than 25, you probably don’t have the privilege of remembering
what original hip-hop was like. I imitated the styles and developed
a passion and a longing to make this brand of music my own. I
followed my desire to Houston, where I learned a lot about what
not to do in this industry. That experience led to a time where
I put music aside for awhile.
My brother, E-1, asked me to collaborate on some songs and write
some tracks for the next CD. I got inspired again when I began
focusing on the spiritual side of the music. I love putting the
rhymes together with a message for the soul and the ears. There
is nothing as satisfying as knowing that someone is listening
to my lyrics and in their hearts saying “I feel that way
too.” I'm very pumped about what my brother and I am working
on next. Not just the CD part but the future projects we’re
working on to provide mentorship for the youth who want a voice
in spiritual logic.
Some people feel hip-hop out of pain but I feel hip-hop out of
LOVE. LOVE of music…LOVE of my culture…LOVE of family…LOVE
of people…LOVE of where I came from …LOVE of where
I AM…A PASSION for SPIRIT & LIFE!
